Frank and John Fenton
introduced America to inexpensive iridized glassware in 1907. Their innovative process involved spraying hot glass with proprietary solutions of metallic salts to produce a microscopically-thin layer of metal which bonded to the glass on a molecular level. Different salts and multiple sprayings influenced the color and intensity of the iridescence which makes Carnival Glass so beautiful and collectible. In the 1970s Fenton, along with Imperial, revived Carnival Glass by re-issuing and reproducing many patterns of their own as well as patterns from other makers whose molds they had purchased. The same process was used to iridize the glassware, however modern glass accepted the metallic salt solutions in a different manner due to modern glass formulation, generally producing a "harder" (some say harsh) iridescence. In 1988, Fenton entered into an exclusive distribution arrangement with the shopping channel QVC: Quality, Value, Convenience. Eventually over 1350 pieces were specifically designed and offered for exclusive distribution via QVC. In 2011, after 106 years of production, Fenton Art Glass closed its doors as a maker of collectible glassware.

Contemporary Condition
refers to modern glassware which is relatively free of the production issues found in antique glassware, due to modernized machinery, advances in glass making chemistry, and quality control. Even so, because modern Carnival Glass is generally still hand-shaped, hand-painted and/or hand-iridized, each piece is technically a one-of-a-kind, and you may still find a minor production issue from time to time.
